The Thinking Game synopsis
The Thinking Game takes you on a fascinating journey into the heart of DeepMind, one of the world's leading AI labs, as it strives to unravel the mysteries of artificial general intelligence(AGI).
Inside DeepMind's London headquarters, founder Demis Hassabis and his team are relentlessly pursuing the creation of AI that matches or surpasses human abilities on a wide range of tasks.Filmed over five years, the documentary puts viewers in the room for the pivotal moments of this quest, including the groundbreaking achievement of AlphaFold, a program that solved a 50-yeargrand challenge in biology.
The Thinking Game captures the exhilaration of historic breakthroughs like AlphaFold, the crushing weight of disappointment during setbacks, and the unwavering pursuit of knowledge that defines Demis' commitment to scientific innovation. This film invites viewers to witness one of the most important scientific adventures of our time, exploring the potential of AGI to reshape our world.
Panel discussion
A panel discussion will follow the documentary screening, as well as an open discussion with the audience. Our panelists are:
Kate Henne - Prof Kathryn (Kate) Henne is the Director of RegNet, the ANU School of Regulation and Global Governance, and leads the Justice and Technoscience Lab (JusTech). She also serves on the executive of the ANU Integrated AI Network and is a board member of the ANU Agrifood Innovation Institute. Before commencing as RegNet’s Director, she held a Canada Research Chair at the University of Waterloo, where she was a Fellow of the Balsillie School of International Affairs.
Charles Gretton - Charles is an Artificial Intelligence (AI) expert with 20 years experience, involving both research in academia and research commercialisation. He co-founded the successful AI company HIVERY in 2015, which is a CSIRO Data61 spinout supported by the Coca-Cola Founders platform. His existing areas of expertise sit across Automated Planning, Automated Reasoning more broadly, and Machine Learning. He has successfully applied his expertise in a wide range of applications including in computer security, astronomical instrumentation, continental scale retail business optimisation, and mobile robot control. His vision and focus is on developing AI technologies that extend and augment human capability.
Eduardo Eyras - Eduardo Eyras is an EMBL Australia Group Leader and Professor at ANU, where he develops computational methods to study transcriptomes and epitranscriptomes and their alterations in cancer using long-read sequencing technologies. Before joining ANU, Professor Eyras worked at the Sanger Institute (2001-2004) and was group leader at the Pompeu Fabra University in Barcelona, Spain (2005-2019). During this time, he developed methods to annotate RNA alternative splicing in genomes, contributed to the landmark analyses of the human, mouse, rat, chicken, and cow genomes, and led a research program on Machine Learning applied to RNA biology and cancer.
